In Stark County, Crystal Wade has built more than a salon, she’s created a community. As the owner of Hairology House of Beauty, she blends hairstyling expertise with education, offering a full-service salon and training for aspiring beauty professionals.
A Full-Service Salon with a Unique Approach
“Hairology House of Beauty is a full-service salon,” Crystal explains. “We have a nail tech specializing in acrylics, gel polish, and pedicures. Private suites are available for barbers and estheticians, and our main floor has six stations, currently used by three stylists, including myself.”
Beyond services, Crystal fosters professionalism and integrity among her team. “It’s about more than hairstyling, it’s creating a well-rounded business environment.”
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Crystal’s love for hairstyling began in middle school. “I had long, thick hair, and my mom worked full time, so I had to learn to do my own hair,” she recalls. “By the ’90s, when colorful hair and quick weaves were in, I had a clientele before I was even licensed.”
After years in another salon, she took the leap into entrepreneurship. “I worked at one salon my whole career before branching out on my own,” she says.
The Art of Hairstyling and Personalization
Crystal specializes in braiding. “Braids are my favorite. It’s like art, the way you part the hair, create shapes, and blend colors. I also focus on natural, healthy hair care, ensuring clients’ hair stays strong.” She tailors each service to client’s needs. “It’s not just about style, it’s about maintaining healthy, vibrant hair.”
Educating the Next Generation
Crystal teaches braiding certification courses. “I started as a home-based braider, so I understand the journey,” she says. When Ohio introduced boutique registration for braiders, she saw an opportunity. “Many home-based braiders lacked formal training in scalp health and technique. I wanted to bridge that gap.”
Since 2018, she has certified braiders 16 and older. “If I had this at 16, it would’ve put me on the express lane to success. Seeing students become entrepreneurs is
rewarding.”
The Challenges of Entrepreneurship
Crystal’s path hasn’t been easy. “I was forced into entrepreneurship when life didn’t go as planned. I needed work I loved.” She had to learn business operations. “Doing hair is one thing; handling taxes, finances, and structure is another. Having resources and mentorship is crucial.”
Finding Support Through SCMBA
Crystal credits SCMBA and the 2025 Expanding Resources for All (ERA) program for her growth. “I didn’t know about many business resources before joining. SCMBA has opened doors.” The ERA program has strengthened her business acumen.
“Every business in the program has different needs, but we all gain knowledge that fuels our growth.”
Advice for Aspiring Business Owners
Crystal’s advice: “Passion isn’t enough. Educate yourself on business, find mentors, and never stop learning. Trends evolve, and there’s always room for improvement.”
With a strong foundation, a growing team, and a passion for education, Crystal Wade and Hairology House of Beauty are transforming hair and lives.
