The Stark County Minority Business Association (SCMBA), Minority Business Assistance Center (MBAC), City of Canton, and Great Lakes Restoration have launched a 5-week Micro-Enterprise Development Program to support minority- and women-owned businesses in construction.

Participants Jasmine Barrino and Erikka Crain gain hands-on experience renovating the Kirk Schuring Business Development Center at 500 10th St. NW. The program combines on-site training, mentorship from seasoned contractors, and real-time project work with business development coaching, covering job costing, project management, and team supervision.

โ€œThis is not just about job training, itโ€™s about ownership, opportunity, and economic empowerment,โ€ said Ashley Gantz, SCMBAโ€™s Director of Business Develppment & Growth. The initiative provides participants with verified job site experience, professional networks, and tangible contributions to a high-visibility community project. The 2,500-square-foot Schuring Center is being transformed into a startup and co-working hub, giving Jasmine and Erikka portfolio-building experience and pride in helping other entrepreneurs.

This pilot program models inclusive economic development by connecting public and private partners to bridge skilled trades and entrepreneurship. SCMBA plans to expand the program to include more minority and women business owners, ensuring equitable access to construction, leadership, and long-term business opportunities in Canton.
