Canton Black Assistance Foundation (CBAF)

We are proud to spotlight the Canton Black Assistance Foundation (CBAF) and its founder, U.S. Army Veteran Wuyanbu Zutali, whose leadership, service, and community commitment embody the true spirit of Veterans Day.

Founded in June 2024, the Canton Black Assistance Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to uplifting Canton through literacy, empowerment, and support for families in need. Their mission is clear: dramatically improve reading and comprehension skills for Canton’s students, especially those in grades 2–5 who often fall behind state benchmarks despite the dedication of parents and teachers.

Promoting Literacy Through Breakfast & Books

At the heart of CBAF’s mission is the Breakfast & Books Literacy Program, currently operating at seven sites across Canton, hosted monthly in local churches. The program offers students a nutritious breakfast paired with hands-on reading and comprehension exercises, setting the tone for academic confidence and long-term success.

A Mission Born From Community Need

Mr. Zutali founded CBAF in response to two community tragedies:

  1. The severe winter living conditions experienced by residents of Victory Square
  2. The killing of Frank Tyson in April 2024.

These events revealed a deep need for grassroots action. Mr. Zutali felt the community’s response was not strong enough and decided to step up.

Originally intended to help families in crisis, CBAF has since grown to include two major initiatives:

  • FRESH START Initiative: assisting single parents by paying down fines that hinder stability
  • Breakfast & Books Literacy Project: helping children become stronger readers and thinkers

“I don’t consider what we do unique, I consider it necessary,” Mr. Zutali shared.

Leadership Rooted in Military Values
As a veteran, Mr. Zutali brings discipline, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to this work.

“As a veteran, I learned not to quit when under pressure. When times are tough and things aren’t going well, it’s easy to throw in the towel.”

CBAF is powered entirely by volunteers, which brings its own challenges, from scheduling to maintaining consistency. Yet his leadership keeps the mission moving forward.

Looking Ahead

  • CBAF has a bold vision:Establish 16 Breakfast & Books program sites throughout Canton
  • Grow into a powerful resource that supports families economically and drives positive change across the city

Community Partnerships Matter
Mr. Zutali credits SCMBA and its MBAC programming for supporting CBAF’s growth:

“SCMBA has been helpful by providing information on how to start and run a business. The workshops and access to business advice have been very helpful.”

A Message for Entrepreneurs
His advice to those building something meaningful:
“Believe in your dream. Do your research and share your vision with those who believe in you.”
